These three had a common aim: to protect the company's reputation for quality and to ensure that the best sound possible was reproduced on surfaces that were shinier and smoother than those of any other company. The superior Victor product, along with Aeolian's player-piano rolls, enjoyed the majority of all retail sales, leaving competitors to seek ways to cut into their profits. The introduction, after 1910, of coin-operated automatic pianos in penny arcades, billiard parlors, and other public places had quickly displaced the nickcl-in-the-slot phonographs and peep-show machines there and significantly increased Aeolian's hold on the family market.
